Ancient mastiffs which were used to hunt wild boar in Germany, were the ancestors of the modern Rottweiler. The Rottweiler originates from the town of Rottweil in Southern Germany, in honour of which the breed was named. These were butchers' dogs, which were used not only as escorts and to guard animals, but also for transporting slaughtered cattle. At the beginning of the 20th Century, the breed was virtually unkown outside Germany; it was not until the Thirties that the Rottweiler began to be exported to America, Austria and Switzerland and, subsequently, throughout the world.

      The well-proportioned body, above-average height, thick coat and boundless loyalty to the owner, are the main characteristics of the Rottweiler. The Rottweiler is a strong and friendly dog with a well-balanced disposition and good nature, that can be used for a number of different purposes. The Rottweiler makes both an excellent watchdog and a family friend. Its increasing popularity is, among other things, attributable to its innate obedience, sense of duty, quick perception and the fact that it is relatively undemanding.
